The Wonder of Love

Roseline was a quiet girl who grew up under the protective care of her mother, Adeline. She was a beautiful girl,  tall and black-skinned but she was not seen outdoors except at school. She had hard time making friends, due to the way she was raised by her mother, Adeline.

Adeline, as a single parent was much concerned about her daughter, Roseline. As a result she made up her mind that she was never going to let Roseline have any friend outside of her home, other than herself, the mother. And because she had feared that the negative influence of friends might rub off up on her unspoilt daughter, she decided to make herself a companion, a mother, and a father to her.

However, Roseline was not perfectly comfortable with this condition, yet being an obedient and understanding daughter of her mother she had always strove to avoid attracting friends: being socially withdrawn and purely introverted she was made to love and care about nothing, only but her studies and the little quality time, Adeline would have with her; usually every day after she had returned from work and Roseline from School.

Adeline, was a teacher at kendy Roots college where she taught a subject on physical  education, however, she had all the time to be with Roseline. Whenever they both were home, she would prepare her a nice, delectable meal and read her a few stories. But this was never before Roseline was done with all her take-home assignments; and it was usually during the night hours.

Adeline, had always read her stories about  fairies since her childhood, but this time it was about stories of two lovers who took an oath of blood and vowed together that they were never going to leave each other unless death would undo their blood bond of love.

‘Once upon a time, Adeline began to tell Roseline one of her new evening stories, ‘ there lived a handsome king in the land of Arator, named Pythuz who fell in love with a spirit woman called shinta.  This spirit woman, called shinta, as a spirit made Pythuz fall in love with her, so that it seemed as though he had forgotten his head in her love. He was in love but could not really tell how or why he was in love, nor did he have an inkling that shinta was a spirit.’

‘Over time, their love grew and grew. They were very fond of each other, so much that many a time they would spend night together on the King’s royal bed.’ “But mother did you the king marry her first,  before she decided that she was going to be spending some night at his royal house?” ‘No! Roseline, but as a king she didn’t have to bother about that as nobody was going to question about the morality of that. “Ok, maybe it was because she was a spirit woman that she wasn’t worried about that, Roseline remarked.    ‘Yes, as a spirit she had nothing to fear but the man, Adeline replied and continued again.  ‘Meanwhile, With Pythuz being thickly in love nothing else about his kingdom seemed reasonable to him again except Shinta,  the spirit woman.

‘But there came a day after many years of their being together that Pythuz got up in the middle of the night to hold her in his arms as he used to do whenever they slept together . Indeed, to his amazement she was no longer there, she had disappeared and returned back to where she came. ‘Pythuz not knowing exactly where she was, he searched and searched everywhere, wall,  cage, prison and even holes in the palace and also ordered his guards to go into the forest at that night to look for her, yet Shinta was  no where to be found within and outside the ambiance of the kingdom.  “Wow, but mom what happened to the king after she disappeared? asked Roseline. ‘Nothing actually on the outside but the king cried bitterly, and decided that never would he love a woman with all his heart. ‘And for this reason kings of many kingdoms marry many wives today and also keep numerous concubines so that they would never be heartbroken by the love of one woman.’

Now, a few days later, precisely a day after one night before the eve of Roseline’s 25th birthday; she had a terrible nightmare and was very sad. It was about her social life. She had lost interest in birthdays and this was because she had no friends. Deeply depressed and in brown thought as she sat alone in her little room she questioned her nature. ‘Why is it that I have no friends and not a single one with whom to celebrate my birthday? Oh!,’ she protested quietly and said,  ‘I’m just being like a lonely bird in the world of its own; having no one to shelter it from the freezing cold of summer. ‘Why, she questioned herself further, ‘is it because I’m a girl? No, I don’t think so because most girls have friends anyway, but I don’t have any.’

Unfortunately, Roseline was not comfortable with the way she was raised any longer. She was troubled and perturbed by an extreme feeling of detachment from the world. And now sought reasons why it was so with her. Not any more, though Adeline would not approve of it, she could not hold up being alone any longer and not having friends around to celebrate her birthday since childhood, thus far. With a lot of negative thoughts sweeping constantly through her mind. She rose up sharply from the bed upon which she was sitting, took a rope and made a human head-sized loop, tied it’s end to a ceiling fan hook and kicked behind a wooden stool on which she climbed as she pulled in her head. Gradually, her neck was locked in the loop, until she lost her breath of life.

Surprisingly, it was not long after then, and as though it was told Adeline in her ears that something evil had happened in her home that she walked out of her own room and repaired into Roseline’s to share stories as they used to do; now it was a story of their lives. On getting to her door she saw a shape of human body hanging loosely on a rope. She ran fast to her, stepped on the stool, untie her, and brought her down from the up she hung. Then, not knowing what to do at that moment: Crying and blowing her some breeze to see if she would breath, all to no avail.

Adeline, in confusion she quickly went to the homes of some of Roseline’s college mates in the neighborhood both male and female inviting them to her birthday, which most of them imagined to be so uncharacteristic of her and her daughter, Roseline. At that time before she went to them, she already had at short notice gotten cake , Ice cream, and other items used for celebrating birthday set on a table.

When they were all seated at the table in the dinning parlulor murmuring and asking about Roseline. She tearfully led them to the main room where Roseline was lying with no sign of life. ‘Roseline has left us after suffering a brief illness two days ago, Adeline told her college mates.’  But a young, handsome boy named Joem, who was among them was much more troubled than the rest of his friends about Roseline because he knew how much Adeline hated seeing friends around Roseline. He did not believe Adeline’s words to them and concluded within himself that Roseline might have taken her own life because she had grown tied of being a lonely girl and having everything decided for her by Adeline.

Joem, loved Roseline so much, though this was unknown to Roseline, yet Adeline noticed it soon before he could even find the best opportunity to confess his love to her because she had secretly gone to warn him that he should never let it, no matter how much he felt about it, sprout out more than she had seen, else she would have him killed.

However, seeing Roseline lay breathlessly as they sang her happy birthday in sorrow. Joem boldly resolved within to walk to the biar on which she was laid, then he took her hand and held a long mouth-to-mouth kiss with her. The atmosphere in the room was strange for everybody, and  there was also utter silence. Adeline boiling up in her heart like one over-heated oil on a gass fire, she did not know what to do, even as she hated seeing someone else around her, except herself Adeline. At the same time she began to move slowly to the biar behind which Joem was standing. Suddenly, Roseline coughed Oho! Oho! Oho!. Out of fear Joem jumped over her and every other person in the room and were headed for the door save for Adeline. Briefly, all were afraid to draw near to her until her mother touched her, took her hand, looked into her eyeballs, and called her by her name Roseline and she responded  before  they were now convinced that she had been brought back to life by Joem’s kiss.

Adeline having seen what happened, she was shocked and totally surprised at what Joem did and how her daughter Roseline was brought back to life by his kiss; now as she was marvelled and being filled with joy she gently turned to Joem and said. ‘Joem today I have seen the wonder of love. Truly you have taught us the healing power of love. The need to love, to be loved, and to keep loved ones close and never alienate ourselves from friends.
